Variable Bit Rate Video in ATM Network: Models and Statistical Characteristics

This report introduces some basic issues regarding the transmission of variable bit rate (VBR) video in asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) networks with concentration on VBR video models and statistical characterises. Performance modeling for VBR video traac provides the starting point, in both the theoretical analysis and engineering design, for traac management , delay-buuer tradeoos, cell loss probability, and other related issues. Three widely used models for VBR traac, namely renewal model, autoregressive model, and Markov chain model, are discussed. Advantages and disadvantages of each model and scheme are reviewed based on its simulation performance.
